The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the most arid places in the world. This region of South America is hot as well as sumptuous. It has volcanoes, cracked earth, rocks but also lagoons, oasis and sometimes blossoming flowers. Many plant species only come out when there is enough rainfall. The Atacama Desert usually receives a few millimeters of rain per year, allowing only a few plants to grow. However, El Niño effect has brought many new changes to this region. Arriving regularly, ocean currents just after the Christmas have a major impact on the climate in Latin America. However, this year, this phenomenon has happened twice, as explained by Daniel Diaz, director of the Tourist Services of Atacama. Indeed, the flowers grow steadily but such floral carpet had never been seen in this arid desert land for the last fifty years. More than 200 species of plants have grown. This colorful explosion of plants has resulted in an increase of almost 40% in the tourism in this region.
