The Australian town of Coober Pedy is attracting more and more tourists who are curious to see the world’s first underground city. Inside the city, the people have all the necessary arrangements to live a comfortable life.
The town of Coober Pedy was created in 1915 by miners who were its first inhabitants. Originally, the first tunnels were dug by miners in search of opal. This region contains the world’s largest opal reserves. Then the workers began to settle down into the mines as the temperatures of Coober Pedy are particularly difficult to bear. The land is dry and arid, and in summers the temperatures rise to 40°C. On the other hand, the winters are very cold. So to find a moderate temperature, the people preferred to live underground.
Since 1980, the city has become a tourist attraction. In 1981, Umberto Colo who is a resident of Coober Pedy, realized the tourist potential of this region and built its first hotel. Now, many hotels have opened to welcome the wave of curious and eager tourist who want to discover this underworld. The Desert Cave Hotel is also one of the most popular in the city.
