German scientists are designing the future of augmented reality! This new system called “Thermal Touch” can detect the infrared heat left by our finger on any surface or object and changing it to an interactive system. The perception of the world around us will be completely changed!
The technique is called Thermal Touch, is a system for viewing the world around us with a portable interface, just as is the case of a tablet or connected glasses. With the help of an infrared camera, this innovation can transform your surroundings into a touch surface. Peter Meier, CEO of metaio at the origin of this concept explains: “Nowadays, there is a lot of talk about the portable computing devices, such as the Google Glass, but nobody explains how to best use these devices. We need a practical interactive interface to use these devices, and this is why we have developed Thermal Touch.“
Consisting of an infrared camera and a standard camera both connected to a tablet, the system prototype stores the thermal footprint of a person’s finger touching a surface or a object. Augmented reality software metaio is then used to interact with the selected point by providing access to various options.

We are really impressed by this application to transform all that is around us into an interactive surfaces. Congratulations to the creators of Thermal Touch for their creativity! In writing, we can already foresee how this technology can affect the different objects around us and our lives. Do you think that digital interfaces such as these will be useful in everyday life?
